Habt Ihr Euch schon entschieden?

Yay, today marks the official start of the Tartan X-mas QAL! This week is all about the fabric choice and cutting. Have you decided yet?
Karine also tells us something about the history of the tartan.

Stoffauswahl und Zuschnitt … und ein bisschen Tartan-Kunde
Fabric choice, cutting … and a little history of tartans

After admiring my “Cosy and Joyful” fabrics by Maureen Cracknell for months, I noticed that the nutcrackers have the perfect size for the plus signs. After creating far too many different colour versions with the colouring images and the free part of prequilt.com, I chose the coordinating fabrics from my stash – that’s as sensible as it gets here!

I have always been fascinated by the topic of the origin of tartan and its meaning. That’s why I did a bit of research and if you like, you can read my summary here:

Tartan-Kunde: Zwischen Clans und Clashes
A little history of tartans: Between clans and clashes

Technically, the term „tartan“ refers to a pattern where different colours woven in twill weave form a check. Often you’ll find a broad base check and a finer overcheck, the repeat being called “sett”. Traditionally, tartans would be woven from worsted new wool, tainted with plants, mosses and berries from the region. Hence the similar colouring of tartans of the same region!

Here you can see a tartan being woven by hand.

Karierte Hüte gab es schon in China
Tartan hats in China

Surpisingly enough, the oldest fabric fragments with tartan pattern weren’t found in Scotland, but in China: little hats for jade figures from 3.400 bef. Chr.! The first Scottish fabric fragment, the “Falkirk Sett”, dates from the 3. Century aft. Chr.:

In the beginning, tartans only differed from region to region and people often had more than one pattern to wear. It wasn’t earlier than 16th/17th Century that clans started to claim a pattern for themselves: Wearing the same tartan created a feeling of unity, being able to tell who belongs to another clan was equally vital in the conflicts aorund the succession of the English throne.

Der Dress Act
The Dress Act

In 1746, the Dress Act, enacted by the English, prohibited dressing in tartan in order to weaken the Jacobites and their culture in the Scottish Highlands. Only members of the British Highland Regiments were allowed to wear tartan. The Dress Act was abolished in 1782 and tartans and kilts instantly became the national uniform of Scotland. The Highland Society of London started to register all official clan tartans – you find them here Scottish Register of Tartans. It’s easy to register your own tartan there, too! This is actually quite popular: many companies, clubs, cities, organizations like Amnesty International, but also designers like Burberry, Barbour, Ralph Lauren or Vivienne Westwood have their own, new tartan…

Aufstand und Tradition im Karo
Rebels and traditionalists in checks

40 years under the Dress Act were enough to give the tartan the right vibe as pattern for marginalized/izing groups and subcultures: from British punks and the Grunge subculture to the Rednecks, you’ll find the checks anywhere. If that’s of special interest for you, this article might be a good read: https://i-d.vice.com/en_uk/article/vbde8x/a-punk-and-political-history-of-tartan.

From the late 18th Century, tartan patterns become very popular with the British upper class, the Royal family and the military – thus a symbol for tradion, elites and nationalism – when at the same time, Scottish people felt suppressed by England and tried to reach and express their roots by wearing tartan.

Seems that the only thing non-political about tartans is the huge joy about tartan holiday décor you find in English speaking countries: there can never be too much tartan when it comes to table clothes, dishes, clothes and wrapping paper!

I hope you enjoyed my little excursion into the history of tartan, even if I couldn’t show you so many pictures. In any case, it is a very exciting topic!

Es wird Zeit für mich…
Time for me to…

… to finally realise my idea for a Halloween tartan. Fingers crossed that I find the time this weekend. If I’m lucky it will rain and storm and I can’t do anything in the garden.

Bleibt gesund und kreativ!
